If there was no brutality would there be the martial arts? Are the martial arts a result of cause and effect? Good and evil are endlessly, sometimes seamlessly related to each other. Like a Karmic cycle, Capoeira was born out of a self-preservation, a desire to establish a right to existence, a determination not to succumb. It was ingenious in that it camouflaged its purpose under a cultural, almost juvenile folk identity, so strong that despite being banned and punishable by death, it was nurtured from being defensive and anodynic to patently aggressive. Over the years, Capoeira has become a high art. It is taught worldwide, often flamboyantly exhibitionistic, and a performance not to be missed.
