At a time when the most celebrated ‘laborataries’ in this country are those of religious extremism, that extraordinary apostle of peace, Mahatma Gandhi, continues to cast a long and wondrous shadow in one part of Maharashtra. Non-violence, self-reliance, human dignity, these must be the most persistent ideas of the century; as obstinate as its greatest champion. In Nagpur, Wardha and Hemalkusa, these ideas find resonance in the work of some very remarkable people. To experience their work in harsh conditions, where a glorious sunrise is often an ironical backdrop, makes a difficult travel story. Yet, it is one that must be told. If only to remind us that Gandhiji is alive and spinning ... with a twinkle in his eye.
