Indian miniature painting has often been likened to chamber music. Small, luminous works, its delicate lines exquisitely detailed, offer a narrative intimacy that could only belong to a string quartet. Ever since its appearance during the Moghul rule, the Indian Miniature became the basis of limitless self- expressions emerging from various schools distinctive in their own styles. From narrating events in courts and palaces, to making music a source for art, or drawing upon pastoral scenes and the changing moods of seasons, miniature painting has been an art form that has been patronized and nurtured to this day. Here, we view the rain-inspired works of a bygone era that now resides in museums and collections of the State and Royalty.
