When it rains it pours music

It is said that Raag Megh Malhar is so powerful that when Tansen sang it in the court of Akbar, the heavens opened up and rain cascaded down in torrents, and the air sizzled with thunder and lightening. Music has that energy – to commune with the cosmos, while the seasons, particularly the monsoons, inspire a rain of emotions in man.

Lyricist, composer, film theorist, teacher and singer, Madan Gopal Singh explores the influence of rain in Punjabi folk songs, religious chants, in the melancholic strains of a nautch girl or in the soothing rhythm of Sufi music.
