'My Name is Shazia Mirza':

The funny-sad humor of a stand-up comedienne

by M. K.Raina

Is she real? Dressed down in the ordinary, but lucky pair of black pants, an ordinary black shirt, and the unmistakable hijab, Shazia could be an ordinary girl with ordinary needs, but no – she decided to be a stand-up comedienne. The only muslim one at that. She catapulted herself from a humdrum suburban existence to stand up there and laugh at herself, her community and the world at large. Politics, religion, life and sex become excavation grounds from which emerged witty and insightful commentaries on a world gone awry. Shazia has learnt to write her funny-sad lines the way she knows best. Truthfully. Shazia is, today, being recognised as one of the most sought-after entertainers worldwide.
