NEW PERCEPTIONS

Crossing boundaries in West Bengal

In West Bengal, following on the footsteps of masters from the Bengal School like Abanindranath and Gaganendranath Tagore, Binode Bihari Mukherji, Nandalal Bose and Jamini Roy, the next generation has been as recognised and prolific in their art practice: the late Chintamoni Kar, Paritosh Sen, Ganesh Pyne, Lalu Prosad Shaw, the late Dharmanarayan Dasgupta among many equally gifted artists, painted works that represented their distinctly Bengali social constructs or their aesthetic leanings. Today, however, there is a marked shift among the new crop of artists towards a larger world. A world of multi-exposures to style, form, opinions and views. No longer is the Bengal motherland the only source of inspiration. The canvas is beyond one’s territory. It is borderless and full of vibrant, new possibilities.
