Ritwik Ghatak (1924-1976) the revolutionary filmmaker, waged a long battle with history and the partition of Bengal. He made its fragmentation the
vocabulary
of a trilogy: Meghe Dhaka Tara, (The Cloud-clapped Star), 1960, Komal Gandhar (E Flat) 1961 and Subarnarekha, 1965. The grief and anger that Partition evoked stayed with him for much of his life until time had distanced him enough to look back with more understanding than anger. But the wound wouldn’t heal, and he kept looking back. And alludingt to it. It was reality that guided him. The passion, fire, love and sorrow of our lives that are contextual and universal.
