Editor's Note:

West Bengal and Bangladesh. A state and a nation. India’s Partition in 1947, divided its people but a shared language and culture have interfaced since, in a manner that is emotional to say the least. Both lands so fertile, (barring the famine in 1943-44), it is said that its crops grew with minimal toil, yielding a harvest of time for its people to dream and write poetry. Laid back and opinionated, the Bengali revels in animated adda or  chat sessions, held in smoky neighbourhood teashops. Fish and sweets determine their menus while politics is their staple, but it is words, music and images that have essentially ignited their imagination.

This issue, ‘Two Bengals’, explores the cultural trajectory of both lands
