CALCUTTA KOLKATA
Kali and communities

 by Leena Kejriwal

One of the most laid-back cities in the world, Calcutta wouldn’t seem so with its teeming population and traffic snarls. It is the only city in India where trams still snake down busy streets and hand-drawn rickshaws plied by-lanes until they were recently banned by the state government. Over the years, Calcutta, called Kolkata since 2001, is home to not only the volatile Bengali, but also a growing population of immigrant communities which have contributed to its rich and intricate textures. Leena Kejriwal, young photographer and resident of the city, records some images of the communities inhabiting this fascinating and bewildering city.
