GOD OF THE SMALL ROAD
Bohurupi and its many faces

 by Bijoy Chowdhury

The performance art form is a direct interface between individual or group performers and the audience. It appeals in as much as it shocks audiences into reassessing their own notions of art and its relation to culture. Interest in the medium, especially in the west, stems from a desire to be a spectator of its ritual and to be surprised by the unexpected unorthodox presentations that the artists devise. The work may be presented solo or with a group, and performed in an art gallery or museum or in alternative spaces like a café or street corner. Unlike formal theatre, the performer here, is the artist who follows an abstract narrative, mostly performed impromptu or following a bare script and improvising in the process. Although, it is only since the 60s that performance art has gained recognition in the west, it has been around in Asian countries for over a century in a rustic form as we discover here.
