Pari Saberi, director of over 70 plays, has taken on a wide wingspan of subjects — from the lyrical poetry of Forough Farrokhzad, to Sophocles’ Antigone to love stories from the Quran — and experimented with a range of treatments, incorporating live Iranian music, Ta’zia, the traditional religious theatre of Iran, and Sufi dance. Her performances have won awards at internationally acclaimed theatre festivals. For her theatre contains ‘the whole gamut of human emotions,’’ that helps her “penetrate into people’s inner feelings and discover the deepest beauty — and ugliness’’.
