Myanmar, better know by its English corruption, Burma, became an independent republic on January 4, 1948. Governed by a parliamentary democracy, it was soon overthrown by a powerful military. Steeped in Buddhism and ironically, ravaged by the very violence and corruption it opposes, the people are locked into an oppressive system.

Within its tumult, Aung San Suu Kyi continues to lead the voice of dissent. While an extended 'Visit Myanmar Year' wears its most benign face, urging tourists to foray into its low-profile streets, a long-yearned for democracy waits alert, in the wings.
