RECONSTRUCTIONS: Dialogue with Self-portraits

by Yasumasa Morimura

Ten years ago, Yasumasa Morimura made a series of works titled, Self Portrait as Art History based on classic paintings in western art. It was followed by a series on Hollywood women stars and another one on iconic male figures from Mao to Mishima. An appropriation artist on the lines of Cindy Sherman, Morimura became a superstar, inviting accolades from home and the international fraternity of art. “Art is basically entertainment,” says Morimura. “Even Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci were entertainers. In that way, I am an entertainer and want to make art that is fun.” Having said that, Morimura has gone on to making works that do not just entertain or mirror iconic images but engage in a commentary of our times.
