SORRY! WE ARE FROM GAZA............ by Fares Akram The Israeli Gaza Strip barrier was first constructed under the leadership of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. It was completed in 1996, and the purpose was stated as a measure for “security and counter-terrorism.” Much of it was torn down by Palestinians at the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Intifada uprising. However, it was soon reconstructed, a concrete wall of over eight metres with wire fencing, electronic sensors, high technology observation posts and buffer zones on lands bordering Israel, and Egypt completely encircling the Gaza Strip. June 2007: The Palestinian Civil War between Hamas (Islamic Resistance Movement) and Fatah (Palestine Liberation Movement) intensified.
