In a museum, on a rice terrace, or knee-deep in a ravaged ocean, Dadang’s fibreglass and terracotta installations stand mute testimony to our tumultuous times. Mute yet powerful - they move, provoke, disturb, shake you out of your apathy. Born in 1957 in the small town of Tegal, Central Java, Dadang Christanto is today one of Indonesia’s foremost contemporary artists. An artist of conscience, his work reflects a deep concern with environmental, social and political issues that plague his country and the world. Quite often, the artist is his work – as he performs to benumbed audiences.

If the international awareness of modern Asian art has only just begun to rise in the white-dominated world, since the mid-80s to the early 90s, modern Asian artists have been pursuing awareness of international developments in art for the last 150 years.
