India as a nation is indeed “a curious mix derived from old story and legend and modern fact”, made and remade by waves of intimate contact with Persians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Chinese, the Arabs, the Central Asians, and the peoples of the Mediterranean. Thus, one is not surprised when the great Urdu poet Firaq Gorakhpuri wrote: Sar Zamin-e-hind par aqwaam-e-alam ke firaq/Kafile guzarte gae Hindustan banta gaya [In the land of Hind, the caravans of the peoples of the world kept coming in and India kept getting formed].
