From the deep of Rajasthan, a group of desert musicians have sung
their way into the international arena. The Manganiyars. Having
adopted Islam in the 16th and 17th centuries, interestingly, does
not deter them from singing in praise of Hindu Gods.
In fact, most of their lyrics emerge from Hindu folklore and
mythology, sung mostly for Hindu patrons. The music has an energy
of its own. It transcends the limitations of religious grids to
embrace humanity at its core. We have here none other than Komal
Kothari, the charismatic spirit behind the Manganiyars, sharing
with us his deep and committed relationship with the musicians,
their work and journey in life.
