A country of breathtaking landscapes, picturesque beaches and a wonderfully mild climate, South Africa is also the wealthiest and most developed of all african nations. Until just five years ago its resources were completely monopolised by the blankekrag, or white power; colonisers chiefly of German, Dutch and French descent who imposed the oppressive system of apartheid on the majority – the indigenous blacks.

Since Independence, Nelson Mandela, the charismatic hero of the African National Congress, has fathered a democracy based on peace and reconciliation. And change has swept through its streets.
