Anwar Saeed:

Presence & Absence

by Aasim Akhtar

He is the ancient storyteller. And every painting is a narrative that unfolds in radical juxtaposition of the political and personal. The former deals with historical memory, of responses to military rule during the 80s, social alienation and violence.

The latter works investigate self-identity and sexual parametres – a search for the subconscious, emotion and spirituality; and the body in relation to social stigma and oppressive maxims. Unfettering himself from these canons, Saeed discovers freedom and vigour in the luminous colours of his palette. The body is celebrated. And his work becomes the inquiry and the response – hauntingly beautiful and curiously unsettling.
