Along the banks of the river Indus are found the makers of the
fabled ajrak. One balmy winter morning a couple of years ago, a
busload of people headed out on a special quest. Textile researcher
Noorjehan Bilgrami, author of the book Sindh jo Ajrak, had decided
that it was time to turn words and images into a film
that would capture not only the process that went into the making
of this traditional Sindhi textile, but the elusive essence of the
culture that sustained it. Tehmina Ahmed records the experience
with her pen and camera.
The ajrak is a symbol of Sindh, the land through which the mighty
river Indus flows to its confluence with the sea. The civilisations
that have risen along its banks have always given the artisan a
treasured place in their lives.
