Song of the Road:

                                                                  by Uma Narain

The mystic and the metaphor meet, in a search for Truth. A search that has inspired the most profound thoughts and lyrical poetry in Sufism; from as early as the 9th century in the works of the Arab woman-saint Rabia to the well-known Persian poet, Rumi. Today, their philosophy echoes in the subcontinent. Particularly in the Sindh region of Pakistan, in the lyrics and music of Fakirs; and in the songs of the Baul minstrels from Bengal, India. Belonging to both, the Hindu and Muslim communities, the Bauls consider conventions of Islam and Hinduism equally meaningless.

The Fakirs and Bauls transcend geographic and religious divides in their shared ecstasy–singing in joyous abandon, of love for all humanity and an ultimate union with Truth.
